Handgemaakte houten Kauri vaas uit Nieuw Zeeland, vintage
Special, this wooden handmade vase from the Kauri tree, Agathis australis, the largest and most famous native tree of New Zealand. Kauri are among the most powerful trees in the world, growing to more than 50 m in height, with a trunk circumference of up to 16 m and living for more than 2000 years. Maori used kauri wood for boat building, carving and building houses.
Swamp Kauri has been submerged in the peat bogs of northern New Zealand for up to 45,000 years by a natural disaster. Kauri wood is one of the worlds most precious and exquisite woods. Swamp Kauri is known as the oldest workable wood in the world.
Due to a lot of logging, the Kauri trees have almost disappeared. About 95% of Kauri trees have been felled. Fortunately, the Kauri tree is now protected and replanted. The Maoris also used the wood of the Kauri because it was easy to work with.
The vintage wooden Kauri vase is marked on the bottom with N.Z. Kauri Waimimiha Swamp Ahipara, Carbon dated 44500 years. Handcrafted by Teraki crafts, A. Taia N.Z. The vintage Kkauri vase has some small scratches and some small spots, otherwise in good condition. A special item bought in England.
